From burnout to a best-fit role

I got burnt out in clinical psychology then organisational psychology in roles that looked perfect on paper. I had changed careers from event manager to musician to psychologist. And at 34 years, after being burnt out twice, I finally figured out how to design a role that was a best fit for me. Part of me was so happy and part of me was so angry. 

How is it that we haven’t been properly taught – at school, TAFE, uni or in the workplace – the frameworks to craft a role or design our career. I am bamboozled by this.

This means we: 

1. don’t know how to effectively express exactly the kind of work we want to do 
2. don’t know how to effectively explore role options in an organisation
3. apply for a role that is the next rung up on the ladder, whether or not it’s a right fit 
4. apply for a role on Seek because we feel confident enough that we can do it, whether it’s a fit for us or not
5. stay in a role that is no longer serving us
6. do not know how to advocate for ourselves in a workplace to get onto interesting projects or add to / delegate aspects of our role.

Role and career design or crafting is essential to:

1. have impact that is fulfilling at work
2. create an enduring solution with no Sunday-itis
3. find the right environment in which to work
4. know how you can get hired via conversations
5. understand that you can hire your own boss.
